Tips for Sitting Less at Your Office Job
It’s been all over the news for the past decade that sitting too much is bad for you, but what can you do when you work a desk job in an office? The good news is that there are many things that you can do to keep yourself from having to sit down in one spot for long periods of time helping you get up and spend time on your feet.
Drink More Water
Hydration is important, but an added benefit when you work a desk job is the fact that you’ll need to get up to use the restroom more often. This benefit can be increased by visiting a restroom that’s located on the opposite side of the office, or even one that’s up or down a few floors, and take the stairs to get to it. Also, don’t forget to refill your water bottle at a fountain or water cooler that’s far from your desk as well, this will give you another reason to stay on your feet, and avoid sitting for too long at any given time.
Visit the Post Office
There are tons of reasons to visit the post office and getting out of the work office is as good as any. This can become a routine and knowing the location of the nearest post office to send mail directly instead of your mailbox itself carries a variety of benefits. For example, if you’re in Scottsdale, you can visit the Scottsdale post office to pick up supplies since many of the supplies you likely use at your job can be found there. Make sure you take the opportunity to walk to the post office to send or receive mail and packages.
When it comes time for lunch, or a long break, instead of unpacking a meal you bagged up and brought to the office, take the chance to get out and go eat lunch somewhere else. Remember to walk to your destination, calling a taxi or other mode of hired transportation kind of defeats the purpose since you’ll be sitting as you ride. Enjoy your meal at a local restaurant or cafe, then walk on back to your office feeling refreshed, and ready to get back to work.
Get a Standing Desk
If you really want to take things to the next level, you can invest in a standing desk. These desks have been around for a while now and have made a big impact in offices around the world. If you’re not quite ready for a standing desk just yet, you can compromise and get an adjustable desk that allows you to sit or stand at your leisure.
Avoid Internal Emails
Need to talk to a colleague? Don’t send an email or text, instead, get up and actually go talk to them in person. Not only will this give you an excuse to stand up, but it will also make you seem more personable, and friendly as well. d, it’s always nice to talk to a coworker face to face instead of through electronic devices, allowing you to form stronger social bonds.
