Choosing the Perfect Rug for Your Bedroom
Is there anything more luxurious than getting out of bed and curling your toes into a thick and cosy rug? Whether you want pure luxury or something more fun and practical for a child’s room, here’s how to choose the best rug for a bedroom.
Why do you need a bedside rug?
A well-chosen rug is a stylish choice for any bedroom adding texture and colour, but there are practical benefits too. The right rug can hide a floor stains or section a larger room into different areas. It can minimise noise from wooden floorboards and help to protect them from damage. Choose the right rug and it will pull all the elements of your decor together to provide a beautiful counterpoint to a fabulous piece of furniture, or a focal point in a more minimal room.
Choosing the right size
Will your rug be at the side of the bed or the foot? Or will it be used in a separate seating area or near a dressing table? You may even opt for a rug that’s big enough to accommodate your bed and any bedside furniture; this can look brilliant in a small bedroom.
To get the most accurate idea of the size you need, measure the area where your rug will lie. Now replicate the dimensions using a couple of sheets of newspaper to create a template. Lay the template on the floor and adjust until you have the look you want, then find a rug that matches those dimensions as closely as possible.
Find your style
If your bedding and upholstery is a solid colour, you can use a bold and patterned rug to add plenty of visual interest. If you already have a pattern in the room then a block colour low pile wool carpet will tie everything together, but don’t be afraid to experiment with a pattern on pattern, if you see a rug you love that breaks the rules!
If you’re buying for a child’s bedroom, involve your child in the buying decision – they may love a rug you hate but as long as it’s a practical choice let them express their own sense of style.
Add interest with shape and colour
A round rug can be used to create a vignette in the bedroom when used to highlight a reading chair and table, or you might opt for a natural hide rug as a focal point. A beautiful hand-knotted circular rug in a vivid pattern or colour can look stunning in a very minimal room.
Colour can be used to create any mood in the bedroom from soothing and restful to dramatic and sensuous. Enhance a neutral scheme with a cream or muted blue rug for peace and serenity, or tie a bold colour scheme together rich jewel tones of burgundy and ultraviolet; the Pantone colour of the year can look amazing as an anchor for a dramatic bedroom scheme.
You can take the predominant colour in your bedroom scheme and simply extend onto your rug, or choose a highlight colour that ties everything in the room together. If you want to give a neutral scheme a pop of colour then red, orange and yellow impart energy and dynamism.
A word on texture
Finally, don’t sacrifice practicality for look and feel. A flokati rug might look fabulous but may not stand up to your pets, whereas a sisal mat can be extremely hard wearing but isn’t forgiving underfoot first thing in the morning. Polypropylene and acrylic are both affordable and hard wearing choices but a pure wool rug will deliver luxury underfoot and is surprisingly easy to clean. Whatever your choice, a new rug is the ideal finishing touch to any bedroom.
